Preparing For A New Puppy

Bringing home a new puppy or dog can be an exciting but challenging time for both you and your new family member. From readying your home to preventing behavior problems, it takes careful planning to make your new friend feel at ease. Before you bring Fido home, prepare for a smooth transition with these expert dog training tips from Comfort Zone®:

  • Prepare your home for your new puppy by cleaning up – and keeping clean – everything you do not want him to chew on or play with. Also, be sure to have durable, safe toys on hand for chewing and playtime.
  • Use a crate as an effective tool to help your puppy feel like he has his own space and assist in potty training.
  • Help your puppy get a good night’s sleep by providing him with a comfortable place to sleep and a stuffed animal, old shirt or baby blanket to help him sleep through the night.
  • Make potty training easy on your new puppy by being patient and consistent. Remember accidents happen and that he will learn more easily if you take him outside at the same times daily, like when he wakes up, after feedings and naps, and before bed.

Ease the Stress of Separation

When a mother dog is nursing, she emits pheromones – natural chemicals that allow her to communicate with others of the same species. Ease your puppy’s stress by giving him a blanket or towel that has been rubbed on his mother before you take him home.

You can also use comforting pheromone products within your home to help ease your new dog’s transition. Research shows that products such as Comfort Zone® with D.A.P.® (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) mimic the same pheromones, making dogs feel secure and comfortable.

With lots of love, patience, consistency, proper care, and help from products like Comfort Zone® with D.A.P.®, you and your puppy will have many happy years together.
